Chania/Rethymno: Balos & Gramvousa With Pickup & Boat Ticket

3.Chania/Rethymno: Balos & Gramvousa With Pickup & Boat Ticket

★★★★★★★★★★4.3 · 1,703 reviews · 9 - 12 hours · from $50

Travel by air-conditioned bus from Chania or Rethymno to Kissamos, then cruise to Gramvousa and Balos Lagoon. You get about two hours at Gramvousa and 2.5 hours at Balos for swimming, snorkeling, and the castle hike. Guides speak several languages, including English and Greek.

“Nice trip to two popular destinations, we had quite enough time in each of them, considering how much the transportation takes. The ship had some food and drink options, and natural water was surprisingly cheap (0.6 eur per 0.5 l). Snacks are expensive in the port, better buy something in advance. Air conditioning wasn't regulated in the bus, it was cold inside (it was late September). The ship jumped a lot on the waves, so if you know you might be seasick, take some pills before it, the guide also offered them to us in the bus.”

★★★★★★★★★★4.8 · 1,674 reviews · 6 - 8 hours · from $115

“The Driver was 20mins late to the designated pick up point (annoying) but then we got transported up to the tip of Malta to a "boat" which took us across to Gozo - this part was a little underwhelming. However as soon as we stepped onto the Dock at Gozo, super professional and organized, transport took us to the Quads where we were met by Mark and Dave (our guides) brilliant guys, helpful and made the day fun. Touring round the island on the quads was amazing and we felt perfectly safe. Lunch stop was well organized with great food. Side Boat trip well worth while, Overall Great Adventure Day…”

Sliema/St. Paul’s: Gozo, Comino & Blue Lagoon Ferry Cruise

5.Sliema/St. Paul’s: Gozo, Comino & Blue Lagoon Ferry Cruise

★★★★★★★★★★4.1 · 1,137 reviews · 7 hours - 450 minutes · from $41

Spend seven hours aboard an air-conditioned catamaran from Sliema or St. Paul’s Bay, with free time in Gozo and Comino. Explore Victoria independently, swim at the Blue Lagoon, and add a €15 motorboat trip to the caves if sea conditions allow. No guide is provided.

“This particular “tour” is basically a ferry that takes you to Gozo and drops you off, you walk around for a few hours on your own, then they pick you up and take you to Blue Lagoon. There they help you get a speed boat ride for additional $$, and wait for you while you try to get some beach time. It’s not bad but if the beach is packed (it’s a tiny beach), then it would be better to be on a boat that allows you to sunbathe and jump off while anchored away from the beach. Overall, we liked it, it’s air conditioned and comfortable.”

From O Grove, a Spanish-speaking guide takes you across the Ría de Arousa to working bateas, where mussels, oysters, and scallops grow. You’ll see the seabed through underwater windows, then eat steamed mussels with wine, water, or a soft drink.

“We had a great time on the boat. Loads of freshly cooked mussels, wine, soft drinks and a very pleasant cruise around the mussel farms. It was especially good due to the great crowd of people we were lucky to be with, who were all having a good time too, signing along to all the Spanish tunes that were playing on the way back to port. Even some dancing. Top day out.”

“The trip was overally very nice. Logistically-wise everything was very good organised, both the bus and the boat were on time all the time. The only minor issue was the boat. It was very loaded with people and sometimes you would need to stand for the entire ride. Also, the bar on boat was super crowded and you had to wait 20-25 min to get a bottle of water. Both Gramvousa and Balos were very beautiful.”

Ride an air-conditioned bus from Chania-area pickup points to Kissamos, then sail to Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa. Swim in clear, shallow water, see the Dimitrios P shipwreck, and climb to a 16th-century Venetian fortress. Guides such as Vicky, Eva, and Irene are praised for keeping the long day organized.

“Not only was Balos Lagoon beautiful, but we got to finish the day with Gramvousa which honestly I preferred to Balos! I hiked up to the fortress then went for a quick swim in the beautiful water. Whole docking at Balos took entirely too long (I think maybe 45 minutes?) and cut into our time, that was the only downside. Our guide was just lovely and warm and I really enjoyed meeting her. Highly recommend!”

Guides such as Mark, Justin, Dan, Dion, and Senan have been praised for clear commentary, humor, and careful timekeeping. Expect a long but well-organized day.

“12-13hrs trip just to see two places. Gardens were worth the visit, but i'd trade 30m there for more time in Victoria - 1h15m is hardly enough for a few photos and a quick bite. 5min walking distance at most. The whole trip was conducted very well though. The real highlight was the history, background and other commentary by our guide/driver Justin: on-spot, informative and funny!”
